Chapter Five

Fawn

Brighton’s looking sexy as hell in dark jeans and a navy-blue Polo shirt. It doesn’t help that the scent of his cologne still lingers on my skin from when we were dancing. Call me a sucker all you want, but I really want to hear what he has to say. I’d never forgive myself if I didn’t give him the chance to explain. I’m really hoping that he can make sense of everything because ever since Monday I’ve been thinking of nothing but him. When I saw him walk into the bar tonight, I thought it was meant to be. The girls at his table hardly bothered me because of how he reacted to them when he sat down. The only thing that really bothered me was when he said he had someone. It gutted me, even then I gave in and danced with him, I couldn’t help it. There’s something pulling me to him, something invisible bond that strengthens the longer we’re near.

“I won’t need that long.” He says, taking my hand and putting it in the crook of his elbow. “My car is over here.” He tells me, walking toward the familiar black BMW I’ve seen parked at the school.

Brighton opens the passenger door for me holding it open until I’m seated then he shuts it. At least the man has manners. I lean back in the seat and take a deep breath. My heart is beating crazy fast and I have no idea what I’m doing, but I’m going with it. Brighton makes quick work of getting in and starting his car. Before he pulls out, he looks at me. “Where do you live?”

I give him directions and his eyes narrow on me.

“That’s like two minutes away.”

“You better talk fast then.” I counter.

“Jesus Christ woman, I’m not Superman.” He growls.

“That’s a crying shame,” I say, shaking my head in mock disappointment.

Brighton snorts. “You aren’t going to make this easy on me, are you?”

I bite my tongue to keep from laughing. “Are we going or what?”

Brighton pulls out of the parking spot and heads towards the exit. “The other day wasn’t a mistake, but I wish it would have happened under different circumstances.” He says before pulling out onto the road.

“You mean where no one would have found out?” I ask.

“Yes, no. Goddamnit Fawn.” He growls.

His answer pisses me off more than I care to admit. I stare out the window waiting for the rest of his explanation, if he has one.

“Shit, Fawn that’s not how I meant it. You know this situation is delicate. I’m your boss.”

“And you have a girlfriend.” I snap.

He shakes his head. “That’s where you’re wrong. I do not have a girlfriend. Not yet anyway.”

“Explain what you said to that woman at the bar then.”

He winces and looks at me like I’m not about to like what he says next. “That was Kendra, my ex. I haven’t seen her in over a year. Tonight, was the first time we ran into each other since the breakup.
